Since 2005, Northeast Christian Church has sponsored
an outreach program that provides formal attire to girls wishing
to attend their prom, but lack the financial resources. Since inception
over 1000 girls have been "dressed" by Prom Project. Each
girl receives a complete outfit consisting of a gown, shoes, jewelry
and purse and the most exciting part is it is all free of
charge!
A Message from
Jennifer Simpson, Chairperson
Prom. What comes to mind when you think about your glory days of
prom? The theme of the evening? Your lovely date? Dinner and lots
of photos? I would have to say the DRESS, of course! Attending prom
is a pivotal point in any teen's life. Every girl wants to feel
like a princess, and it's all about the dress!
The reality of purchasing a prom dress is merely
a luxury item for most families. Many girls simply don't have the
extra money and resources to purchase a princess gown for one night.
But their journey doesn't have to end at this point. With a little
bit of planning and communication with their high school counselor,
dreams really can come true.... and we invite these sweet darlings
with open arms!
My journey with this ministry began as a volunteer
in the spring of 2007. As a personal shopper, it was my job to help
my assigned teen find the dress of her dreams at our annual event.
Once I witnessed the transformation of her unsure and shy eyes turn
to a gleaming smile and glow in the mirror I was absolutely hooked.
I remember one year we got a gorgeous dress donation from a displaced
Hurricane Katrina victim. The story was very touching and this woman
shipped it up to us in time for that year's Prom Project. A few
weeks later, I saw that same gown on one of the precious teens at
our event. My eyes welled up, as they do today when I think of this
story. At that moment I knew that God had His hand in every detail
of this ministry; bringing our community together, reaching across
state lines.
This event happens only through the gracious
support of our local community. I am continually amazed at the passion
of our volunteers and generosity of our growing number of donors
and sponsors. I've had the privilege to take on the leadership role
in 2010 with the confidence of knowing that our volunteer pool is
rock solid behind me. We are here to serve any teen girl that has
a need in the Kentuckiana area. We are here to simply show God's
love, serving these girls as the hands and feet of Jesus.... one
dress at a time. I hope you will support our effort as we empower
and encourage teen girls through the Prom Project.
