About Prom Project

Prom Project is an annual event that provides formal attire to junior and senior high school girls who wish to attend their school prom, but lack the financial resources to purchase items such as a formal dress, shoes, or jewelry. Over the years, Prom Project has “dressed” about 2,700 girls in the Louisville, Kentucky area. Each girl who attends Prom Project has the opportunity to take home a prom gown, shoes, and jewelry, free of charge!

Each girl is matched with her own personal shopper who assists with selecting dresses in our boutique, helps her try on as many as she likes, carries her belongings, and truly makes sure “her” girl feels uniquely special and important. After selecting her gown, shoes, and jewelry, each participant gets to sit down and chat with a woman in the prayer room. For some girls, this is the first time anyone has taken the time to pray for them or even to simply sit down and tell them how incredible they are! At completion, the girls get to leave with their dresses and accessories in tow, ready to dance the night away at prom!

A Message from
Leah Guilford, former Chairperson

Prom is an event I’ve always loved. From the time I was a little girl, I can remember wanting to go to my hometown high school on Prom night to watch the grand march and see all the pretty dresses. I thought all the teen girls looked like princesses and couldn’t wait until I was old enough to go to prom and wear a pretty dress. Prom is such a big event in any teen girl’s life. Who wouldn’t want to feel like a princess?

The truth of the matter is that many teen girls cannot afford to attend their prom. Their vision of looking like a princess is just a dream. However, with a little bit of planning and communication with their high school counselor, Prom Project can help their dreams come true! We can’t wait to help teen girl’s look and feel like princesses!

My journey with this ministry began as a personal shopper, or as I like call it – “fairy godmother”. My role as “fairy godmother” was to help my assigned girl find the perfect dress, shoes & jewelry at our annual event. Walking into our dress boutique and seeing the girl’s reaction to a room FULL of dresses is amazing. It can be overwhelming to try and find that perfect dress, but that truly is the most exciting time at our event. What girl doesn’t like to play dress-up? The first girl I helped was so sweet but unsure of which dress to choose, but the moment she found “the one” her eyes lit up the room and a huge smile came across her face; it’s a moment I’ll never forget. I knew at that moment that I wanted to be more involved in this ministry.

After our annual event, my heart was so full and I was humbled by the experience. God was with us all that day as we helped the girls prepare for their proms not only on the outside, but the inside. Spending time with these sweet girls and showing them God’s love is more what this ministry is about. The next year I became more involved by joining the Prom Project leadership team as a Dress Drive Coordinator. In this role, I found that God truly had his hands in all aspects of this ministry. By coordinating dress drives and sharing what Prom Project was about, God had me ministering to people in a way that I didn’t know was possible. Watching Prom Project grow and help more girls each year has truly been a blessing.

I’ve been amazed time and again by the generosity of people in our community – not only by their donations of dresses or money to support this mission, but by their actions, words and support. Without them, this event would not be possible. It is my privilege to take on the chairperson role as I know that our leadership team and incredible volunteers are so passionate about serving the sweet teen girls in our community. We are here to serve any teen girl that has a need in the Kentuckiana area. It’s our mission of Prom Project to empower and encourage teen girls…one dress at a time.
